Saturday's Ride:
The wedding took place Saturday afternoon at the Newfound Gap
Overlook in the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Newfound Gap
Overlook is around 14 miles south of Gatlinburg on US-441 the main route
thru the park.
Since the wedding wasn't taking place till the afternoon, me and my
better-half took off for a loop around the park and to run the "Tail
of the Dragon", which we have heard so much about. The plan
was to head west from Gatlinburg on US-321 to the
Foothills Parkway and run it to the beginning of the "Dragon"
(SR-129).
From Deals Gap we headed east on SR-28 to US-19/74. We stayed on
US-19 northeast and drove thru Cherokee, NC and entered the Great smoky
National Park from the south side. We got to the wedding with just
15 minutes to spare. The round trip from the cabin to The Tail of
the Dragon, thru Cherokee to Newfound Gap for the wedding, and then back
to the cabin was 170 miles long.
Sunday's Ride
back to Ohio:
Sunday morning I headed out for home back
in Ohio. I departed the Gatlinburg area on US-321. I rode
east to
Newport, TN and picked up US-25E north, stopping at the
Bean Station, TN scenic overlook. I headed back up
US-25E into Kentucky and jumped on KY-11 in
Heidrick and headed north
and then connected with US-421 north. I followed US-421 north to
McKee, KY and turned right on SR-89 which for the most part was an
excellent motorcycle road. In
Winchester, KY I connected with
SR-627 and rode it north to
Paris, KY and hopped on US-27 for the ride
up to I-471 in the Covington, KY area. Then I just headed north to
I-71/75, then I-75 to home. The total miles from the cabin in
Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area to Franklin, Ohio was 365 miles. Not
a bad cruising day for a Suzuki Volusia 800!
On Monday the bride and groom headed east towards Washington DC for a
two-week ride/honeymoon trip on their "almost" matching Harley Street
Glides. Their plans were to check out the Washington DC area,
motor up to Maine, then head west towards Buffalo, NY, then maybe
Chicago before returning to Lexington. Happy motorcycling and best
wishes to the Bride & Groom! Click Here to RETURN to the Thursday/Friday web page Maps: Our "Dragon Loop" ride to the wedding Sunday's Ride back to Ohio
